Project Update with Marie Payne
Design Coordinator, Marie Payne, knew exactly where to turn and what to expect when it came time to embark on her own home renovation project. Working within the architecture industry helped Marie feel prepared for the planning, selections, and renovation process, but for others, building and remodeling can be confusing and overwhelming. Follow along on Marie’s own Lee Design Studio project and learn through the lens of her unique perspective as she remodels her family home.
Eight months into her project, we’re catching up with Marie to hear the latest about her home renovation project!
What stage is your project in?
We are under roof and very close to having all of the rough-in work completed (HVAC, plumbing, and electrical) so that we can move to insulation and drywall in the next couple of weeks. After we get the walls closed up, the details and finishes will begin to come together like cabinetry, paint and tile. This is where the rooms will start to come to life!
Have there been any unexpected bumps in the road?
As with any project, but particularly with renovations, there were some adjustments that had to be made in the field at various phases. Specifically for us, during the framing period we had to rethink a few minor details and move some walls, not costly or problematic though. HVAC design proved to be more challenging than we had anticipated. We had some unforeseen costs with a new furnace upgrade. Running the ductwork forced us to get creative to avoid a negative visual aesthetic. We’ve also had to pivot with some finish selections as some items are on a lengthy backorder that would significantly delay the project.
Is your project still following the same timeline?
The project has been delayed due to all of the common challenges that are facing anyone that’s been building or doing a renovation these last couple of years. Supply chain delays, the pandemic and the building industry just being overloaded with more work than they can keep up with has all contributed to the delays for our project.
Have you learned any new lessons or gained any advice you would offer to readers?
Advanced preparation and giving thought to how each room is going to be utilized and spending some time sketching out furniture placement can be very useful, particularly as you work through the electrical plan and lighting for the home. It can be a time consuming and somewhat grueling exercise, but don’t rush through it and risk regrets later once the electrician has left and construction is done.
